Announcing the joint Questionmark/cApStAn webinar on assessment localization – 8 Nov

by Pisana Ferrari – cApStAn Ambassador to the Global Village

Globalization and innovative web technologies have removed geographic boundaries and opened new opportunities for awarding bodies, technology certification programs and credentialing organizations.  However, with these opportunities come new challenges:  How do you localize items and assessments so they will reliably measure knowledge, skills and abilities across multiple languages and cultures?

Presented by Steve Dept, CEO of cApStAn, leading provider of linguistic quality assurance services, and John Kleeman, Executive Director and Founder of Questionmark, this webinar will help you understand good practice so that your tests measure the same thing in other languages and cultures. We will explore both strategic and procedural issues that must be considered in undertaking an assessment localization project, and offer some tips and strategies for anticipating and overcoming common pitfalls.  Finally, the session will provide a brief overview of some of the technologies and services available to manage the translation and test items and assessment.

About the presenters:

Steve Dept is CEO and a Founding Partner at cApStAn.  He received his education in English, Dutch, French and German but he is essentially an autodidact and a field practitioner. In 1998, Steve was sought out to organise the translation verification of PISA 2000 instruments and, since cApStAn’s creation in 2000, Steve has supervised linguistic quality assurance in PISA and in over 35 international surveys and polls. His translatability assessment methodology is applied in small and large multilingual projects in both the private and the public sector. Steve is the driving force behind cApStAn’s adaptive strategy.

John Kleeman is Executive Director and Founder of Questionmark. He has a first class degree from Trinity College, Cambridge, and is a Chartered Engineer. John wrote the first version of the Questionmark assessment software system and then founded Questionmark in 1988 to market, develop and support it.  John has been heavily involved in assessment software development for over 20 years and has also participated in several standards initiatives: he was on the original team that created IMS QTI and was the instigator and chairman of the panel that produced the Standard BS 7988, which has now become ISO 23988.
